Lake Orono (see map) is a dammed-up portion of the Elk River. It is a recreational lake of 281 acres in size. The public park on its southwest shore has a boat launch, two fishing piers, beach, volleyball court, softball fields, playground, walking trails and park shelters. City Hall is also located on its shores.

The Lake Orono Improvement Association, Inc., a non-profit, was formed in 1971 in response to water quality and management issues.
