Lake Orono (see map) is a dammed-up portion of the Elk River. It is a recreational lake of 281 acres in size. The public park on its southwest shore has a boat launch, two fishing piers, beach, volleyball court, softball fields, playground, walking trails and park shelters. It's the location of Elk River's extremely popular 4th of July celebration. City Hall is also located on its shores.
The Lake Orono Improvement Association, Inc. was formed in 1971 in response to water quality and management issues.
